United Kingdom
In the UK, the U of I System has over 450 alumni living in the region, as well as strong ties to Cardiff University and partners in Edinburgh.
The partnership with Cardiff aims to generate similar career-defining chances that can transform lives. It will allow students, researchers, and staff from both our institutions to collaborate closely across areas of joint expertise: from engineering and physical sciences to healthcare, journalism, and environmental science. The strategic partnership aims to strengthen joint research in key areas: energy systems and net zero emissions, cybersecurity, data science and artificial intelligence, cancer research, geosciences, entrepreneurship and innovation, water and prairie research, and journalism.
Through this partnership, the system successfully established the “Clean Energy and Equitable Transportation Solutions (CLEETS)” Global Center funded by both the National Science Foundation and UK Research Initiative. CLEETS will advance interdisciplinary research and education and accelerate equitable use-inspired decarbonized road transportation pathways by engaging government, private sector, industry, and end-use communities.
The partnership also includes a seed grant on “Pathway to Net Zero” for electric vehicles in the Chicago area.
Cardiff University Partnership
The University of Illinois System and Cardiff University signed a strategic partnership in 2023. The five-year agreement underpins an evolving programme of work and student exchange between Wales’s most research-intensive university and UI – one of the premier institutions in the US.
